My neighbor ( Mrs. Thome) told me a story that the song take the last train to Clarksville was written about her daughter. She has since pasted away and my friends are doubting that my story is true. Can you confirm this? I am not sure who wrote the song.

Boyce and Hart wrote the song.I seem to remember reading that they wrote the song after hearing the end of Paperback Writer on the radio the first time. They thought the Beatles were singing "take the last train to..." instead of "Paperback Writer". They wrote it as a (semi) protest song, not about anyone in particular. I think Mrs. Thome was either dilusional or mis-informed.

I guess I would like to hear from Boyce or Hart since The Last Train to Clarksville does not seem like a protest song, or sound like Paperback Writer.
Mrs. Thome was very sincere and had many details.

I think there is a story to be uncovered !

No disrepect intended towards your neighbor. I know that Boyce and/or Hart have told the story a number of times of the inspiration of this song. They also said the name of the town was just random chance. They were going through a list of towns they had been in, and came to Clarksdale. Close, but not quite right, they changed it to Clarksville, not any town in general. I know they have disclosed when they wrote a song about someone in particular (Words, Don't Listen To Linda, and I'll Spend My Life With You all have personal stories behind them), so I doubt they would change up the truse story behind Clarksville.
Words was written about a girl on a hayride from the midwest, perhaps she got confused about the title, and she was the girl from Words?
