I have not bought the Monkees television series on DVD, yet. I was wondering what those who have it on DVD think about it. Is it good? Is the video and audio superb? Is it better than the '95 Monkees Video Box Set? That's what I have. I got the video box set when it was first released.

the only thing missing is the unique booklet that was included in the 90's VHS box set.

Yes, the DVD set is worth it! You get 5.1. sound as well. Also the discs come in mini-LP sleeves (w/ pics from the 45's).


It's bright, but not as bright as the Laser Discs. I wonder about blu-ray?


I'd wish they put the synacation audio as an option like the bootleggers did.


There's easter eggs too as well, just do a search on the web. Also 33/ 1/3 is the best print (Andrew also said so in his book) of this avaiable.

Yeah, I'd like to buy these sets. The steep price has been what's been holding me back. Maybe someday.

Maybe when these go out of print, a new cheaper price version will come out?

They still havn't found the two lost film prints to two of the episodes. It was remastered from other sources. I'm excluding the pliot (unaired).


If you still have the VHS and a VCR, by all means keep them!

If they re-do these I hope they come out with better packaging. Include both seasons in the same package for under $50.00...

Yes. That would be a great idea. If my vhs set will hold out long enough for a better version of the box set. Preferrably something with slim cases or something.

Any guess on which episodes are lost? The prints that is.


Too Many Girls

Both are not as bright as the others. As they went w/ the common broadcast version of Too Many Girls w/ the blurred cleavage.

On the VHS set, I noticed problems with the episode "Monkees Blow Their Minds." All the commercial fade-outs faded out too quickly, thus cutting a few seconds off at every commercial break. I know this, because I had a video of the same episode taped off TV and the TV version had the full show, uncut.

I wish Rhino would have included the syncation versions (w/ new/different songs) as bonus features too.

Oh yeah. That would have been cool to chose which version you could watch. I always thought that the song "Forget That Girl" fit the episode "One Man Shy" way better than "I'm A Believer." And that's just one example.

Not to meantion it's better than hearing Clarksville and I'm A Beilver over and over again!

I can get tired of "I'm A Believer" over and over again. However, I've never grown tired of "Clarksville." That song is so stinkin' awesome! The original studio version of that song is one of the best recordings of all time. I love it.

I wonder if the prints to the on tour and paris episodes are lost too. Or if they were meant to look that way?

Director James Frawley was notorious for trying different kinds of filming techniques throughout the series. I read in a book ("Monkeemania" by Glenn Baker, I think) that he would sometimes use overexposed film to create a certain effect. I think "The Monkees In Paris" was done that way on purpose. That would be due to the fact that the stuff shot on location in France had a certain look to it, so they filmed the scenes in the Monkees pad to match it, so it looks seemless. At least, that's what I always thought.

And I would say the same thing for "The Monkees On Tour" episode, also. Of course, in "The Monkees On Tour," the intro was not in the Monkees' pad, but actually on the set of the house in "I Dream Of Jeannie." But it appears to be the same technique.

I read in one of the books that they used those portable cameras, they'd be like camcorders today but on film. I can't remember what they were called. Home video cams perhaps? For the "On Tour" and "In Paris" episodes that is.

The network that aired Turn On BTW was ABC.
