Just an interesting note: I went to see "I'm Not There," the Bob Dylan biopic, and one of the songs in it was I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone! The last place I thought I'd hear a Monkees song, but it was great to hear it nonetheless!

That's weird. But you know what's weirder? The Monkees never covered a Bob Dylan song. I guess he wasn't "Brill Building" enough for them.

Well Nez's "What Seems To Be The Trouble Officer"? sounds like a Dylan satire, and St. Mathew is about Bob Dylan or certainly sounds Dylan inspired.

Also Davy covered Dylan as well.

Oh yeah. Davy covered "It Ain't Me Babe." That was one of the better tracks off "David Jones." The Monkees as a group never covered Dylan. I wonder if Kirshner ever considered Dylan's material for the Monkees.

Dylan's stuff isn't bubblegum enough for Donnie!

You've got that right. Michael Nesmith's stuff wasn't bubblegum enough, either.

Dylan was not signed to Screen Gems as a writer, so The Monkees would not have been allowed to record his material.

Nez also once said "why should we cover someone else's song?".

Of course Nez said that. I must agree with him that some of their best musical moments come from their own written songs. Nesmith's material is top notch. I also like Davy's songs. I think Davy is underrated as a songwriter. He's written some great songs. I really like "The Poster," "War Games" and "You And I" (Instant Replay version).

On the other hand, Boyce & Hart defined the early Monkees sound.
